About Us

Bay Kids Club was originally setup by a group of parents and teachers in 1994, who needed after school care. At that time I was employed as supervisor of the programme.

After a couple of years of operating as an incorporated society, the parents and teachers who set it up were moving on. As they couldn’t get new parents to take over their rolls on the committee, the parents, the committee, the Principal and the Board of Trustee’s agreed to let me take the Club over as a Sole Trader.

There were procedures that were set up at the start up of Bay Kids Club which over the years I have updated, even when I wasn’t Oscar approved, I still used there Guidelines which I have always kept up to date with.

I have always run the before and after school care programme with the same principle as it was set up as “a community service” for the working parents of Titahi Bay, Porirua, Wellington.

As of May this year Bay Kids Club has become Oscar approved, with the Documented Policies and Procedures required by Oranga Tamiriki Ministry for Children.

Oranga Tamiriki Ministry for Children came and met myself and my staff at school to interview us and look over our documentation and to see how we operate with the children. Also to ensure that all of our Policies and Procedures were being complyed with. On the day of this accessment we had 26 children attending, so as you can imagine it was a busy afternoon just getting the roll check and afternoon tea sorted, once this was done a group of children were off to the playground for a game of softball 2 to 4 other children just wanted to play outside (it was a beautiful day) and the rest of the children settled down to arts and crafts, some children reading, others playing board games. After about an hour or so of watching Bay Kids Club in action the Oranga Tamiriki Ministry for Children officer told us that he was impressed with our programme. Also impressed that we accept children from other schools.

Bay Kids Club is a fun after school care programme, everyday we have various arts and crafts available to the children, board games, outdoor games or free play weather permitting we do have tv as well but we find there are only certain programmes throughout the afternoon that the children want to watch, which pleases us as we don’t want the tv going all afternoon. The older children year 5 upwards we do suggest they spend time on their homework, even if for only 10 minutes, this will be 10 minutes less when they get home, we do not have internet access, so for some children who require this they will have to do this at home.

Often when parents turn up to collect their children they don’t want to go home, which I’m sure is pleasing to the parents knowing that their children have enjoyed themselves so much.

We can tell when the children walk in the door in the afternoon if they are ok or not, like ourselves, sometimes our children have had a bad day.

We take our job very seriously as we are looking after the most important people in your lives, your children. Their safety and well being is what matters to us especially when in our care.
